Christian Ch�vez (born on August 7, 1983) is a singer and actor best known for his role as Giovanni M�ndez L�pez in the telenovela Rebelde and its spin off pop group RBD. Since 2007 he has been open about his homosexuality.
Personal life
In early March 2007, a magazine published pictures of Ch�vez signing documents and exchanging rings with another man, allegedly his Canadian boyfriend (and later identified as B.J. Murphy), outing Ch�vez with them. The pictures had been taken in 2005, the year in which gay marriages became legal in Canada. Ch�vez declared in March 2007, that the photos showed a part of him that he had not been willing to discuss previously.[4][5] With his announcement, Ch�vez became the first openly gay Latin recording artist in history.
On 30 March 2007, after Ch�vez's announcement of being gay, Ricky Mart�n told The Associated Press of his solidarity with Ch�vez's public declaration, saying, "Life is too short to live closed up, guarding what you say...(Ch�vez) has to be free in many aspects. I wish him much strength."[6] Though Chavez is outspoken in supporting gay rights and opposing homophobia, he remains one of a handful of openly gay Latin actors and recording artists. He has been the face of numerous HIV awareness campaigns.
In 2009, Ch�vez confirmed divorcing his husband.[7] The reason for their separation has been the subject of much speculation, but Ch�vez insists that their relationship did not end on bad terms: "[Murphy] is a person I love and respect; I also admire him as a professional."
In March 2012, Ch�vez confirmed dating Los Angeles Real Estate Agent Ben Kruger after photos of them together were published in the tabloid TV Notas.[8] and later People en Espa�ol.
In May 2012, People Magazine reported that Chavez had signed on as a spokesperson for the 2012 Reelection Campaign of Barack Obama
